About the Role

 

The Family Support Worker, Ngalang Moort Ngalang Kurlangah (Our Families Our Children), will promote the development of school readiness in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children though providing support and education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait families of children, ante-natal to four years, across the City of Swan in line with the Program Model, Ngala’s strategic direction, business plan, NMNK Program Model and contractual obligations.

 

This position facilitates direct delivery of parenting services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait parents/carers of children, antenatal to four years, to have the skills, knowledge and confidence to nurture the wellbeing and development of their children in preparation for school readiness.

The Position

We are currently recruiting for an individual who yearns to make a difference and is available from now to 31 December 2024 for a maternity cover. This is max term 0.66FTE (50 hours per fortnight) Family Support Worker – Ngalang Moort Ngalang Kurlangah (50D) based at our Ellenbrook Office. Workdays and hours are flexible.

Key Responsibilities

Plan, deliver and reflect using a partnership, strengths-based and culturally secure approach to:

  1. Deliver a range of home visiting (or safe place) support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families who have limited knowledge of, or access to, parenting support services due to a variety of issues including but not limited to, low socio-economic status, isolation or lack of transport. This will be using a professional led framework, with flexible delivery.
  2. Deliver group education sessions including Parenting & Play Time support sessions to increase parents/carers early years knowledge and skills of how children grow and develop.
  3. Deliver community engagement activities in partnership with local services to enhance families’ capacity to participate in programs.

 

About You

 

To be successful in the role you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Education, Early Childhood, Community Development, Social Work or working towards
  • Demonstrated experience in working in a family support role, particularly in supporting families with complex needs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of child development 0-4 years.
  • Understanding of and ability to work with a strengths-based approach.
  • Proven experience and ability to develop trusting and respectful relationships with Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities and staff.
  • Effective interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively with parents/carers, community members and other professionals.
  • Group facilitation skills.

If successful, you will need to possess a current WA driver's licence, Working with Children Check, and satisfactory National Police Clearance obtained within six months. Aboriginality is an occupational requirement for this position under 50D of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984.
